Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar on Wednesday ordered the immediate construction of Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand Dam.
The court order stated that the Council of Common Interest did not express any reservation about Bhasha and Mohmand Dam.
“The water resources are pertinent not only for human lives but for the country’s stability,” it read.
During today’s hearing of the suo motu notice pertaining to water scarcity across the country, the CJP inquired “How much water are we wasting?”.
Replying to this, the ministry of power and water responded saying over 90 million acre-feet water is being wasted in Pakistan per year.
According to the ministry of power and water, one million acre-feet water costs $500 million.
Earlier this month, the top court took a suo motu notice of a report by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) regarding water scarcity.
According to the report, Pakistan may suffer absolute scarcity of water by 2025.
